Compartment 11 (Yare) is one of the largest within the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project extending 14.4km from Yarmouth along the left bank of the River Yare to Reedham. The compartment comprises agricultural land, grazing marsh, residential properties, listed buildings (drainage pumps including Cadges and Polkeys drainage mill), a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Berney Arms Mill) and the Halvergate Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Part of the area, Berney Arms Nature Reserve, is owned and managed by the RSPB. There is a footpath from Yarmouth to Reedham which forms part of the Weavers Way and Wherrymans Way trails.
This was the first compartment subject to major improvement works with a combination of setback and strengthening used between Berney Arms and Reedham. The setback areas are being used by the Broads Authority for dredging disposal with the Project creating open water, reedbed and salt marshes.
Planning permission for the piling removal was granted in July 2007.
