Compartment Description

Compartment 36 comprises approximately 6600m of floodbank on the River Yare and covers an area of 887 hectares. There is one designated site in this compartment, Breydon Water SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), which is also designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Ramsar site under European and International legislation. Breydon Water extends approximately 650m down the Waveney from its confluence with the Yare and is designated primarily for its winter waterfowl. The large expanse of mudflats provides an important feeding ground for large numbers of birds. A significant proportion of the marshes are managed as Tier 1 (permanent grassland), 2 (extensive grassland) and 4A (Arable reversion to permanent grassland) under ESA (Environmentally Sensitive Area) agreement. A large number of residential properties, roads and amenities are located in this compartment, particularly in the east, where a substantial section of Great Yarmouth is within the compartment boundaries
