Name: Compartment 1, Upton
Location: River Bure, Upton Marshes
Compartment 1 includes a 4251m stretch of floodbank, along the left bank of Upton Dyke and the right bank of the River Bure, from Upton Dyke boat yard to the beginning of Compartment 2 (South Walsham Marshes). The floodbank protects grazing marshes of an area of 432 hectares.
Interestingly, there are a few historical sites within the flood compartment; such as the Grade II listed Upton Mill (also known as Black or Tall Mill) with early 19th century former mill cottage and outbuildings, Palmers Mill, a well preserved hollow post mill, and the site of Waters or Careys Mill. Upton Broad and Old Upton Broad, sites of former medieval peat working, are also found within the compartment.
The improvement works started in 2006 and were completed in 2007. They include a large length of setback between the IDB pump and the area opposite Thurne Mouth. At Upton dyke the line of the floodbank has been moved back from the piled edge, the Parish slipway renewed and the piling and quay heading protecting the boatyard replaced. A double dyke system was installed to provide the opportunity for the main drain to be re-routed around the edge of the compartment at some time in the future.
There are many opportunities for walkers as a public footpath runs along the entire length of the floodbank, into adjacent Compartment 2 (South Walsham Marshes), and downstream to Acle Bridge where it links with the popular Weavers Way long distance footpath. There are also a series of footpaths through the grazing marshes which link with the footpath along the floodbank allowing a series of circular walks. The public footpath along the floodbank also allows access for fishing from the bank edge.
Popular casual mooring areas are the piling alongside Upton Mill and opposite Thurne Mouth to the end of the compartment. The installation of sheet piles at the head of Upton Dyke, a parish staithe, provides private moorings for local boat owners and summer visitors. In addition, the Eastwood Whelpton boat yard at the end of Upton Dyke provides a boat hire service.
