Compartment Description

Compartment 18 includes stretches of floodbank of the River Yare (Beauchamp Arms Public House to Short Dyke), Short Dyke, Rockland Broad and Rockland Boat Dyke, totalling to 3072m.

Within the compartment there are a few historical sites including the remains of medieval Claxton Castle or Manor, a site of a former drainage pump (which was replaced by a steam engine pump) and the former route of Claxton tramway. Archaeological findings recorded are medieval earthworks and pottery, a 17th century French coin and bronze palstaff.

The flood alleviation works began in 2004 and were completed in 2005 with 2400m of the works involving floodbank strengthening and 720m of floodbank rollback.

There are good walking opportunities within this compartment as a public footpath runs from Rockland Staithe, along Rockland Dyke and then up onto the floodbank which it follows until reaching the Beauchamp Arms where it turns back along the embanked Carleton Beck to Claxton. Rockland Broad is ideal for bird watching with a RSPB bird hide that can be accessed via the footpath from Rockland Staithe.

Rockland Staithe provides a Broads Authority 24 hour mooring area immediately adjacent to which is a private mooring area along Rockland Dyke. Informal moorings occur along Short Dyke and upstream of the Beauchamp Arms on the River Yare.
